Warren County and The Highlands Project are proud to announce the opening of Bread Lock Park and The Warren County Historical Learning Center
Bread Lock Park, located in New Village is now available to the citizens of Warren County. A short section of the Morris Canal tow path and canal prism has been cleared and offers a lovely (albeit short) walk. The lock tenders house foundation give visitors a glimpse into the life of people who worked on the canal. While still buried, the remains of the lock itself speak to the historical significance of the site. A picnic grove, built as an Boy Scout of America Eagle project is located next to the Learning Center.
Please remember that Bread Lock Park is a work in progress. Highlands has many plans to improve the facilities in the future using the talents of the adult volunteers and the youth workers in our care. Some of these plans include: a perimeter walking and nature trail, a "par course" or exercise trail. Historical signage that explains the significance of the site. We invite you to visit the park over the coming years to watch these plans come to fruition.
The park is open from dawn to dusk every day. Please treat the park well. Place all litter in the proper receptacles. No alcoholic beverages are allowed on the park grounds.
The
Warren County Historical Learning Center will be open to the public on the first Sunday of May and the months following from 1:00 PM until 4:00 PM. The Learning Center house detailed models of Lock # 7 West ("The Bread Lock"), the inclined plane in Bowerstown, NJ, Shippen Manor, and The Oxford Furnace. Volunteers will be on hand to interpret the models and answer your questions. The Learning Center also houses an extensive collection of books on Warren County History and microfilm records of original Morris Canal engineering and financial documents.
